The 12 most populated cities in the world. Against their background, Moscow will seem to be underpopulated!

When you get to work at rush hour, you think that a more populous place than your city does not exist in the world. And the situation is especially difficult in the capital with its multi-kilometer traffic jams and the assault of the crowded metro. However, our cities are by no means the most densely populated places on the planet. We will introduce you to a dozen cities with the highest population density.

The ranking of cities with the highest population density was compiled by Forbes magazine. We want to draw attention to the fact that the data are very arbitrary, since official population figures were taken into account to determine population density. So in fact, taking into account the visitors, the “density” of the population may be even higher. In addition, there are discrepancies regarding the definition of the area of cities, since megacities do not have clear boundaries, often merging together with their many suburbs.

Lima

Opens our list of the capital of Peru - Lima. With a population of just over 7.5 million people, the population density reaches 11,750 people per square kilometer. For comparison: in the same rating, the “density” of the population of Moscow was only 9,682 people per square kilometer.

Bogota

On the line above was the capital of neighboring Colombia. With a population of more than 7 million people, the population density of Bogota is 13,500 people per square kilometer.

Chennai

In tenth place is the Indian city of Chennai, which until recently was known as Madras. It has a rather modest population - about 6 million people, but the population density reaches 14,350 individuals per square kilometer of the city.

Taipei

Next is the capital of Taiwan - Taipei. By the way, officially the country is called the Republic of China, please do not confuse the People’s Republic of China, which is located on the mainland. With a population of 5.7 million in Taipei, its density reaches 15,200 people per square kilometer.

Seoul

A row above is the capital of South Korea - Seoul. The city has a frightening "density" of the population - 17.5 million people. And for every square kilometer there are 16,700 people.

Shenzhen

The seventh line of the ranking was Chinese Shenzhen. With an 8 million city population, the concentration of people is 17,150 people per square kilometer.

Lagos

The Nigerian port city of Lagos climbed a little higher. Its population exceeds 13 million people, and the density is 18,150 people per square kilometer.

Shanghai

The synonym for the densely populated metropolis, Chinese Shanghai, occupies only the fifth line of the rating. The population density here is 18,630 people per square kilometer, and the total number of people is about 14 million.

Karachi

One step from the top three was the Pakistani city of Karachi. With a population of about 10 million people, there are 18,900 inhabitants per square kilometer of the area.

Dhaka

The conditional bronze of our rating was received by the capital of Bangladesh - Dhaka. The number of its inhabitants does not reach 10 million people, but the concentration of people surges - 23 029 people per square kilometer of area!

Calcutta

The second place is occupied by Indian Calcutta. The population of the agglomeration has exceeded 14 million, and the population density is 23,900 people per square kilometer!

Mumbai

And the winner of the rating was another Indian city - Mumbai, which was previously known as Bombay. With a population of about 14 million, 28 515 people per square kilometer of the area. In terms of square meters more familiar to us, there are 35 "squares" for each resident of the city. And this is not the size of the living space, but a piece of the entire city for one person!

Now, being stuck in another traffic jam or hustling in a crowded metro, I will always remember that there are places in the world where it is more crowded than ours.
